Potential site named for new health clinic

A county-owned building is being targeted as the location of a new health clinic for low-income and indigent St. Joseph County residents.
But at least one commissioner made clear he will not support a plan to pay for costs associated with remodeling the site.
During last week’s county commission executive session, commissioners discussed a bid from Brussee/Brady Inc. of Three Rivers to perform the work in order to house Covered Bridge Healthcare of St. Joseph County.
Brusse/Brady’s bid was $198,200 for potential work at the Olney Building, a former doctor’s office next door to the east of the county jail.
The agency has received a $910,000 federal grant to provide health-care services.
Commissioner Robin Baker said he would not support the proposal because he doesn’t have faith in the nine-member board overseeing Covered Bridge Healthcare.
Baker, however, clarified that he understands the needs that will be met by Covered Bridge Healthcare, a federally qualified health clinic.
The issue will be discussed for final approval at Tuesday’s commission meeting.
