The city of Sturgis has hired Viridis Design Group of Kalamazoo to design, bid and supervise construction of a $2 million Sturgis softball complex that could be completed by September 2017.
The largest share of the construction cost is covered by an appropriation from the St. Joseph County delinquent tax revolving fund, which also is underwriting a new sports complex in the Three Rivers area.
Viridis will be paid $ 151,400 to design the four-field softball complex for city property located on the south side of East Lafayette Street, adjacent to the city’s electrical substation.
It will replace Spence Fields off North Centerville Road. That property is expected to become available to a neighboring business that has pledged financial support for the new sports site.
The design will include a four-field layout with fenced dugouts, field lighting, parking, concessions/restroom, playground, warm-up areas, a storage barn, sidewalks, bleachers, utilities, signage and site furnishings.
Construction could begin in April 2017 and be completed by September 2017.
