A team of mountain-bike enthusiasts has agreed to help develop a 10-mile route at Meyer Broadway Park in Fabius Township.
Parks and recreation director Jaymes MacDonald told members of the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners Tuesday he made contact last fall with Augusta-based Southwest Chapter of the Michigan Mountain Biking Association about the concept.
After a site visit with MacDonald, a group of Three Rivers-area residents who are a part of the association agreed to undertake the project at no cost.
MacDonald said he and his staff will work with the volunteers and offer for use any parks department equipment necessary. But, MacDonald said, unlike the wide, crushed-limestone Kal-Haven Trail, the Meyer Broadway route will be literally a dirt path.
The route is already plotted and even though it is a loop, it features an abundance of hairpin turns and few straightaways. MacDonald said care will be taken to ensure the route does not interfere with the park’s two, 18-hole disc golf courses.
