I wish that I were more of a reader. I read about two books a year, which is something that I’m not proud of. I receive several magazines monthly and I usually end up adding them to a stack of other magazines, with intentions of reading them later when I have more time. What I should do is set aside a time every day for reading, but the chances of that happening are slim to none. I end up taking those unread magazines and a book with me when we travel, but even then, they usually go unread. It’s much easier to watch some useless drivel on television.
When I actually do open a book, it’s usually a biography. I’m currently reading two books. One is about the history of submarines, not the type you would purchase at a deli, but the kind you would find as a part of our naval fleet. The other is a biography on “The Intimidator”, Dale Earnhardt. It will probably take me the best of six months to finish reading both books.
My wife is just the opposite. She is constantly reading at least one book. She has done the right thing by setting aside a time every day to read. It’s part of her routine to read for about ten minutes before going to sleep at night. I have no problem falling asleep; as a matter of fact, all I need to do is open a book and start reading. I’m usually asleep in about three minutes. I think the solution to my lack of reading is to get away for a weekend to a place where there is no TV. Take my books and magazines with me and do something that would make my mother proud. Read more and become more interesting when it comes to discussing literature. “See Jerry walk his dog Spot. See Spot walk with Jerry to the library. There are no televisions at the library, but Alice is at the library. Walk Jerry, walk. Walk Spot, walk. Jerry is smart, because he reads. Norm is not as smart as Jerry, because he doesn’t read very much. Go to the library, Norm.”
