Ramona Lou Thaxton, age 86, of Colon, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2016, at her home.
Ramona was born Aug. 20, 1929, in Elbow Lake, MN, a daughter to the late Glenn and Nanna (Johnson) Davis.
She graduated from high school in 1946 in Minneapolis, MN and attended Asbury College in Kentucky. While there she met her late husband Charles D. Thaxton and they married August 28, 1951 in Elbow Lake, MN, he preceded her in death May 13, 2003.
Ramona received her BS degree in 1956 from Middle Tennessee State University and began her teaching career at Moore County High School in Lynchburg, TN. Ramona and Charles moved to Battle Creek, MI in 1961 and in 1963 to Colon, where the resided with their five children, until her passing. Ramona received her master’s degree from Western Michigan University and served as a teacher and librarian at Colon High School until her retirement in 1994, all the while remaining active in her grandchildren’s education and staying in touch with her former students and teachers she taught with. Ramona was a member of the Colon United Methodist Church and enjoyed serving the church.
She is survived by her five children; Debra (David) O’Connell of Sturgis, Douglas Thaxton of Colon, J. (Anne) Thaxton of Whitleyville, TN, Jeffery (Pam) Thaxton of Colon, and Lisa (Larry) Swartz of Yorktown, VA, 16 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, brother Duane Davis of WI and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a sister Ruth Boehlke.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD. in Colon. A memorial service celebrating the life of Ramona Thaxton will be Friday, May 13, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Colon United Methodist Church with Pastor John Sterner officiating. Burial of ashes will follow at Matteson Township Cemetery. If desired the family suggest memorials be made in memory of Ramona to the Colon United Methodist Church.
