A fundraiser last month staged by the Animal Control Advisory Board of St. Joseph County has resulted in the purchase of two, new air-conditioning units.
Loralee Knepper, an animal shelter volunteer, said the $5,000 raised during the May 13 event in Sturgis allowed for the purchase of the 14,000-BTU portable air conditioners. The devices also serve as heaters and can be operated by remote control.
Emily Frohriep, chair of the advisory board, said the units were purchased from Home Depot in Coldwater and together cost nearly $1,300. County commissioner Don Eaton has agreed to purchase a third unit.
The units were delivered a week ago and came in handy during Saturday’s high-humidity day and Wednesday’s muggy day, Frohriep said.
She added that there is currently an abundance of dogs at the shelter, so the relief provided by the air conditioners has been greatly needed.
