White Pigeon Community Schools has been given a waiver to begin the school year a week before the traditional day-after-Labor Day start.
Superintendent Jon Keyer said in addition to the state-mandated additional five days added to the 2016-17 school year, the desire to start Aug. 29 instead of Sept. 6 is to stay consistent with Glen Oaks Community College and its Aug. 29 start date.
He said a number of White Pigeon High School students are in the dual-enrollment program and the earlier start date will benefit that group.
As a result, White Pigeon Community Schools will end its 2016-17 academic year June 9.
Keyer said the first day will be a half day and there will be no classes Friday that week.
