The chair of the St. Joseph County Conservation District is encouraging people to learn more about the hemp plant and its diversity of uses.
Carol Higgins said a great opportunity exists later this week, when the Rivieria Theatre in Three Rivers will show “Grow Our Future,” a short-feature film. Higgins said the 52-minute movie focuses on the numerous ways industrial hemp farming and hemp products can lead to healthier lifestyles, regenerative agriculture systems and innovations in green technology.
Higgins appeared before county commissioners Tuesday and elaborated on the subject.
Higgins said the United States imports $245 million worth of hemp annually. Hemp, she reiterated, is used to make a wide variety of products whose production could be a boost to economic development in St. Joseph County.
The movie will be shown at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $8 per person, and proceeds benefit the conservation district and local programs to protect the area’s natural resources.
Higgins said free samples of hemp products, including hemp milk, soap, and edible items, will be offered between showings. Other products with ingredients that include hemp will be available for sale.
