Matt Boerman has been named Officer of the Year for the Sturgis Police Department and Patrick Camburn received recognition with the Fire Department On-Call Award.
Boerman began his Sturgis career in 2004, coming from the village of Hopkins. He has served as a crash investigator, driving instructor, bike patrol officer, and a member of the St. Joseph County Special Response Team.
During a ceremony last week, Public Safety Chief Geoffrey Smith lauded Boerman for his work managing and repairing the department’s in-car computer systems and training officers in the use of body cameras now used by on-street officers.
Meanwhile, Camburn is a relative newcomer to on-call fire department duties, but Smith said he has “one of the best attendance records as well as an exceptionally positive attitude.”
The honoree recently earned his emergency medical technician license and hopes to become a full-time firefighter.
