Members of the St. Joseph County Road Commission Board approved two significant expenditures last week.
During their monthly meeting Wednesday, commissioners OK’d a $1.2 million package that features the construction of an equipment barn and a plan to correct a roofline problem that creates an annual, springtime problem.
The barn, projected to cost more than $825,000, will be put in service as the road commission plans to centralize its operations and move all equipment from its satellite locations in Fabius and Colon townships to its Centreville headquarters.
Meanwhile, the commission also approved a $386,000 expense that will see a roof slope – called a valley drain – corrected over the current garage and office areas. Board member Eric Shafer said the existing design diverts water from rain and melted snow into a flat area where it remains stagnant.
Board member David Yunker said the road commission is making a financially savvy decision by following through on the work related to the Centreville barn and roof.
