The second Meijer store in St. Joseph County opened last week, as the Grand Rapids-based company staged a ceremonial ribbon cutting in Sturgis.
A number of local dignitaries and Meijer corporate representatives were on hand Thursday to commemorate the occasion.
The 192,000-square-foot supercenter is located at South Centerville Road and West South Street.
Store director Marsha Keefer opened the event with a round of thank- you’s to the team of employees who have worked the past 12 weeks to get the store ready for opening day, to city officials, the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce, and surrounding communities and businesses for welcoming Meijer to the community.
To demonstrate the company’s commitment to the community, company officials presented a check for $25,000 to Doyle Community Center to help with construction of a new 2,500- square-foot strength-training center at the facility.
The Sturgis store, a 24-hour business, is the latest of nine new Meijer supercenters to open this year.
The store has created more than 280 jobs.
