Saturday’s Relay For Life event in Sturgis netted more than $23,000 for the American Cancer Society.
Chrissy Dunlap, committee manager for the event, said the amount raised fell short of the $62,000 goal. She attributed the shortfall to a variety of conflicts, including Saturday’s high humidity.
The 12-hour event started at 11 a.m. at the Sturgis High School track and featured more than 200 people taking part. Designated laps included the survivor/caregiver lap, and the silent lap, staged in memory of cancer victims.
Dunlap said she was encouraged by the fact 12 of the 24 teams that signed up were new to the event.
Saturday’s Relay For Life was the ninth annual staged in Sturgis.
The Three Rivers Relay For Life takes place June 24. Dunlap said it typically has strong corporate sponsorship and traditionally raises more than $100,000.
