Officials from the St. Joseph County Conservation District are issuing a reminder that the first of six river cleanup events takes place next week on the St. Joseph River.
The agency is looking for volunteers to lend a hand for a few hours June 18, as it will work to clear litter and debris from a 2 1/2-mile stretch of river from South Railroad Street in Mendon to the River Run Road bridge.
The event starts at 9:30 a.m. and transportation from the end point back to the starting location will be given. In addition, lunch will be provided by the Three Rivers Lions Club.
Additional river cleanup events this summer take place July 9 and 23, Aug. 6 and 20, and Sept. 10.
Prospective participants are asked to reserve a spot so organizers can secure an appropriate number of kayaks and canoes, as well as have an accurate count for lunch.
The conservation district can be reached by phoning 467-6336, ext. 5.
