The recent drawdown of the St. Joseph River to allow for maintenance work at the Sturgis Dam near Centreville forced the St. Joseph County Conservation District to cancel its scheduled river cleanup event last weekend.
With water levels more than three feet lower than usual, the St. Joseph River cleanup between River Run and Angevine roads will not take place. The next cleanup will be July 23 from Angevine Road to Covered Bridge Park on Schweitzer Road.
Conservation district director Carolyn Grace said the next cleanup is being sponsored by Abbott Labs, which has commitments from a team of 24 volunteers to assist with the 2 1/2-mile cleanup.
Prospective participants are asked to reserve a spot so organizers can secure an appropriate number of kayaks and canoes, as well as have an accurate count for lunch.
The conservation district can be reached by phoning 467-6336, ext. 5.
