Lester Hummel, 89

Lester R. Hummel, 89, of Mottville Township, White Pigeon, died Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at Sturgis Hospital, following a short illness.
He was born June 16, 1927, in Constantine, a son of Lester B. and Velma (Shyne) Hummel.
He lived most of his life in southwest Michigan and winters in Florida. He was employed as an electrician for Jerry Krull Home Construction, retiring in 1988.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Carmick DMS-33 in the Pacific. He attended White Pigeon united Methodist Church, was a past member of Mottville American Legion Post #427, a 4-H leader, and was a pilot who owned a Cherokee 140 airplane.
On Dec. 23, 1947, he married Edith L. Blankenship in Goshen, Ind. She died March 6, 2014.
Surviving are his son, Michael (Carol) Hummel of Commerce City, Colo.; three daughters, Theresa (Gary) Gracey of White Pigeon, Patrice (Billy) Burns Jr. of Elkhart and Nancy (Tony) Gizzi of Waxhaw, N.C.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters; a brother; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two brothers.
Visitation will be held 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2016, at Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon, where services will be held at 2 p.m. The Rev. Ed McCutchan of the United Methodist Church will officiate. Cremation will take place following services.
