Prosecutor: Deadly force justified in fatal police shooting

A southern Michigan police officer was justified to use deadly force in the death of a parolee who threatened police with an aluminum baseball bat.

The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports Friday that Jackson County Prosecutor Jerry Jarzynka has determined that Columbia Township officer Joe Lalli and Napoleon Township officer Shane LaPorte were in “imminent danger of death or great bodily harm.”

Lalli shot and killed 51-year-old Terry Lynn Maurer June 26 after officers responded to a domestic dispute report.

The prosecutor’s office says in a news release that Maurer “rapidly and aggressively” approached LaPorte with the raised baseball bat and ignored repeated commands to drop it.  (AP)
