A countywide effort to assist a benevolent organization netted $9,000 in cash donations during a recent, one-day fundraiser.
Over a three-hour period July 23, personnel from almost every fire department in the county joined Walmart stores in Sturgis and Three Rivers, the Three Rivers High School band and Sturgis High School cheerleaders to solicit the money to benefit Habitat For Humanity.
All proceeds will be used toward constructing affordable homes for working families in St. Joseph County.
Firefighters took to the streets of the county’s villages, towns and cities to ask passersby to fill their boots with donations. In addition to the street collection, Walmart stores in Sturgis and Three Rivers made a substantial donation to Habitat and hosted Habitat booths in front of their stores.
The fundraiser capped a week that involved the dedication of Habitat homes in Sturgis, White Pigeon and Three Rivers.
