Kalamazoo Symphony, musicians union reach contract deal

The Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra says it’s reached a contract agreement with members of its musicians union.

The symphony’s Board of Directors and management announced Tuesday that they reached the tentative deal with the Kalamazoo Federation of Musicians Local 228.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports the union is expected to submit the tentative contract to its membership for ratification. The union represents the up to 84 musicians who are contracted to perform with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra.

If ratified, management will submit the contract back to its board for approval.

The last full contract expired Aug. 31, 2014. The union had claimed the orchestra didn’t bargain in good faith during negotiations and blind-sided them with plans to change concert rehearsal schedules. The union filed an unfair labor practice charge in May.  (AP)
