Richard Leer, 86

dad obit 3Richard M. Leer, age 86, of Marcellus, MI and Apache Jct. AZ passed from this life on Saturday, August 27,
2016 at his home in Marcellus, MI.
Richard was born on September 17, 1929 in Middlebury IN. He was the eighth child of Hiram
Elvin and Macy (Yoder) Leer. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Clayton Tom, Ira
and Stanley; three sisters, Ruth Johnson, Mabel Meyers and Frances Bollman.
Rich grew up on a farm in Middlebury, IN. He served his country in the United States Army
during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, he met Rea (Vaughn) and they
were married in October of 1954. They would’ve celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary
this fall.
The family moved to Arizona in 1971 where he got his general contractors license and for 30
years was involved in construction and minor land development. For recreation the family
spent weekends camping, boating, and travelling the back roads of Arizona in their dune
buggy. He also loved Diamondback baseball ~ Randy Johnson was his favorite player.
After retirement he enjoyed raising, training and trail riding Paso Fino horses. Rich was also
a dog lover and leaves behind his special canine friend, Bluebelle.
Rich is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rea (Vaughn) Leer, a son, Thomas Richard Leer
(Terri) of Marcellus, MI and a daughter, Tamara Rae Harding (Paul) of Chandler, AZ. Also
surviving are 5 grandchildren, Leslie Carpenter of Marcellus, MI, Jordan Leer of Los Angeles,
CA, Dr. Andrew Harding of Austin, TX, Maxwell Harding of Tempe, AZ, Abbey Harding of
Scottsdale, AZ and 1 great granddaughter Everlee Belle Carpenter.

Following cremation there will be a Celebration of Life, Sunday, September 4th from 2-5pm at
Rich’s home, 10650 Dutch Settlement Rd, Marcellus, MI 49067. The family asks that those who wish to share in this celebration please do so and in lieu of flowers or memorials, donations may be given to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
