The trial of Westly George, 30, of Three Rivers is now underway. George is charged with the 2015 shooting death of Eugene Jackson on the south side of Three Rivers.
Jury selection and opening statements were made in County Circuit Court, there are seven men and seven women currently on the jury before two will be dropped.
St. Joseph County Prosecutor John McDonough said as many as 40 prosecution witnesses could be called. The defense, led by Deborah Davis, is expected to have at least five witnesses take the stand.
The defense used opening statements to say George was just “in the wrong place at the wrong time” and he ran from the scene because he thought someone was shooting at him.
Two weeks have been set aside for the trial. George was arrested just after the shooting and has been at the county jail since with no bond set.
