Individuals from several area agencies gathered together this month and pledged to put an end to veteran homelessness in St. Joseph County.
Nick Metzger, who chairs the St. Joseph County Housing Task Force, said those in attendance gathered to take action on a goal to end veteran homelessness.
Stoney Summey, director of St. Joseph County Veterans Services, said he had been unaware of the extent of local veteran homelessness.
Summey showed a video about veteran homelessness. According to the video, there are currently 300,000 homeless veterans in the U.S. and 1.4 million veterans at risk of becoming homeless.
He said St. Joseph County is fortunate to be a county willing to come up with an action plan to end veteran homelessness.
Other featured speakers at the event were Michael Wilson of Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, Tami Farnum of Community Action Agency and state Sen. John Proos.
The signing of the pledge to end veteran homelessness took place at a meeting of the St. Joseph County Human Services Commission.
