Tuesday marks the first day of school for eight of St. Joseph County’s nine public school districts.
White Pigeon Community Schools started a week ago thanks to a three-year state waiver allowing it to begin a week early.
Meanwhile, Constantine Public Schools has a new superintendent, as former Riverside principal Steve Wilson replaces the now-retired Chuck Frisbie as superintendent. The 41-year-old Wilson said Constantine expects more than 1,300 students this year, making it the third-largest district in the county.
In Centreville, Matt Hawkins was named new principal at the district’s jr./sr. high. A Portage Lake resident, Hawkins replaces Dennis Kirby, who accepted an administrative job at Vicksburg Middle School.
Voter-approved millages in White Pigeon and Burr Oak meant a number of buildings and grounds improvements over the summer in both school districts.
Elsewhere, Ton Langdon and Jean Logan return as superintendents of the county’s two largest school districts: Sturgis and Three Rivers, respectively.
Also, Christine Barnes in Colon and Roger Rathburn in Mendon will begin their second years as administrative leaders of their respective school districts.
