The St. Joseph County Conservation District’s final river cleanup of the season will be a weekday affair.
Conservation District board member John Nelson said the cleanup will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday and likely take about two to two-and-a-half hours to complete. Representatives from the Centreville-based agency and volunteers will cover a stretch of the Portage River from North Fisher Lake Road in Park Township to Carpenter Road in Lockport Township.
The event is being rescheduled from Sept. 10, when rain forced event organizers to postpone the cleanup. Nelson said in order to comply with various grants, the district must perform at least six cleanups per year.
Nelson said he expects next week’s task to be a relatively easy job.
Anyone interested in volunteering with the cleanup should contact agency director Carolyn Grace at 467-6336, Ext. 5, so an appropriate number of canoes and kayaks can be reserved.
