A 33-year-old Muskegon man possibly armed with a handgun was taken into custody by state police Wednesday in Florence Township.
According to a department media release, police were summoned around 2:40 p.m. to an area near the intersection of Centreville-Constantine and Constantine Roads regarding a personal-injury crash.
While enroute to the location, troopers were advised that the driver was fleeing the scene on foot and armed with a handgun. Through vehicle information located at the scene, it was determined that the registered owner was a subject who law enforcement had been looking for earlier in the day. That subject had been threatening suicide and made threats to harm law enforcement if he had any contact with them.
Troopers set up a perimeter around the area and called in additional resources to assist. Troopers then observed the suspect walk out of the woods and toward their patrol cars. Troopers ordered the subject to the ground and he was taken into custody without further incident.
He was transported to the hospital for treatment and a mental-health evaluation.
