Sturgis approved softball complex site plan

Members of the Sturgis Planning Commission last week approved a site plan for a proposed four-diamond, adult softball complex.
But bids for construction are coming in higher than expected and new ideas are being proposed for expanding the $ 2.1 million project.
City Manager Mike Hughes told planning commissioners that Sturgis received only two bids for the project that will be funded with a major grant from St. Joseph County’s delinquent tax-revolving fund, city money and a contribution from a local business that will acquire the current Spence Field property.
The facility is planned for city-owned property off Lafayette Street near Sturgis Middle School. The layout includes four, lighted diamonds designed for adult softball competition, a concession stand/restroom building, utilities and field irrigation.
Hughes said Sturgis currently fields 56 adult softball teams with its current Spence Field facilities. City officials said adding portable fencing and pitching mounds could also accommodate youth softball and Little League games at the new facility.
