The city of Sturgis will apply for two grants totaling $25,000 and commit to a $10,000 local match to fund development of a proposed dog park at the former site of its historic depot.
Sturgis city commissioners approved the funding proposal earlier this month as recommended by city staff. It includes asking Sturgis Area Community Foundation for a $15,000 grant and applying for $10,000 from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
MEDC requires a dollar-for-dollar city match.
Dog park development cost is estimated at just over $34,000. Possible amenities could include separate, fenced areas for large and small dogs, water and pet waste stations, a double- gated entry with concrete pad, signage, trash cans, benches and fire hydrants.
