The National Weather Service forecast office serving Detroit and Pontiac says its radar system will be down for three days beginning Monday.
Officials say technicians will be installing a new signal processor. It will make a number of improvements over the old system, including boosting processing speed and data quality while enhancing security.
The work has been scheduled to reduce effects on office operations.
During the outage, radar coverage will be available from radar sites in Grand Rapids, Gaylord, Cleveland and Detroit Metro Airport.
Officials say this is the first of four major upgrades of weather surveillance radar planned over the next five years to keep the systems going into the 2030s. (AP)
