Three Rivers Police Department’s K-9, Jake, has received a bullet- and stab-protective vest, thanks to a donation from the non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s Inc.
Vested Interest is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to provide bullet- and stab-protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States.
The program is open to dogs actively employed with law enforcement or related agencies, who are certified and at least 20 months old. New K9 graduates, as well as K9s with expired vests, are eligible to participate.
The donation to provide a protective vest for a law-enforcement K9 is $1,050. Each vest has a value between $1,800 and $2,200, and has a five-year warranty. The vests weigh about five pounds.
Three Rivers officer Steve Dibble is Jake’s handler. Jake, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois, is certified in narcotics.
