Farm animals killed in crash

Several farm animals were killed and injured following a two-vehicle crash last week in Fabius Township.
St. Joseph County Sheriff’s deputies said the collision occurred at 2 p.m. Friday at the south junction of M-60 and U.S. 131.
A semi-truck hauling 180 pigs was southbound on U.S. 131 and collided with an eastbound vehicle that pulled in front of the semi. The semi subsequently traveled into the median and jackknifed.
Several of the animals were injured or killed, while others escaped and roamed the area.
The driver of the car was treated at Three Rivers Health for minor injuries. The truck driver was unhurt; a passenger was treated for minor injuries.
Police said the pigs had just been picked up from northern Kalamazoo County. Additional livestock haulers were called from Jones to assist.
Names of the people involved were not released by police.
