Out and About – Week of November 21st

This Thursday is Thanksgiving, a day when we should all reflect on the many things for which we are thankful for. It’s also a time for families to get together and enjoy each other’s company and share a little love. We should all do this more than just once a year. The family unit is not what it used to be. It seems we all have our own agendas; thus, family-time is usually not near the top of the list.
I usually touch on this every year, but I feel it’s important to do so, because I feel it’s important. What I’m referring to is reaching out to those less fortunate. I’m not talking about monetarily, but the lack of caring family members. If your parents are still living, let them know how much they are loved and appreciated.
If you have a family member residing in a nursing home, or an assisted-care facility, visit them more often, but especially around the holiday season. Don’t let them feel forgotten or neglected. If you have an elderly neighbor living alone, invite them to join you for a festive meal. If you know of a family in need, buy a few extra groceries when you shop for your holiday dinner. There are several places where you can purchase one item and get another for half price. I guess what I’m saying is, think of someone other than yourself. If you already do this, I applaud your efforts.
If you are planning to travel over the upcoming holidays, plan accordingly. Allow for extra time at the airport. Pack a little extra patience if you’re driving somewhere, and leave the road rage at home.
We have been extremely lucky as far as weather is concerned. I can’t believe how nice this fall season has been. I am very thankful for that, and I hope that the moderate temperatures continue for the next five or six months. However, this is Michigan, and I’m sure we’ll get some of that white stuff soon enough.
I guess I should mention something about Black Friday. I’ll never understand how anyone can have a good time shopping on this day after Thanksgiving, yet the stores are full of customers looking for that special item that’s on sale. It’s the same item that was marked up just a little several weeks ago, so that on Black Friday it can be marked down to its original price and everyone will think they are getting a great deal. Once again, travel those store aisles with courtesy for your fellow shoppers and extra patience for the sales associates who must deal with the rudeness that abounds. I’ve found that the nicest customers are those who have worked the other side of the counter.
I’ll close this week by saying that I have more than my share of things to be thankful for. A loving wife, my family, my health to name just a few. I am very thankful also, for you readers of this column. I hope I bring a little hope and a little humor into everyone’s life. I thank you for your continued support.
See you Out and About!
