A Sturgis man was treated for burns and smoke inhalation following a residential fire over the weekend.
Sturgis Fire and Rescue units were called at 9 a.m. Saturday to the 200 block of Surprise Street, where a single-family residence was ablaze.
An elderly man, identified as the homeowner, was found unconscious inside the residence. He was transported to Sturgis Hospital emergency care with burns to his face and arms.
First-arriving crews found heavy fire in the rear porch and kitchen areas. After entry, fire crews conducted a quick knock down, but the fire had extended to the attic. A roof vent was cut to help clear the smoke and allow crews into the attic space to fully extinguish the fire.
Damage from fire, smoke and water is extensive and the residence maybe a total loss.
Investigators said it appears the fire may have been started by the resident working on a gas lantern.
