The St. Joseph County Road Commission will install green lights alongside its amber lights to improve visibility of its maintenance vehicles, including snow plows.
Agency officials said the green lights appear brighter and can be seen from farther away than other colored lights, making them suitable for enhanced visibility in inclement conditions.
Road commission director Chris Minger said the commission will begin using the new green lights for the 2016/2017 snow removal season. He said commission garage workers intend to gradually work them in as repair and replacement is required on each vehicle.
When drivers see green lights on a maintenance vehicle, Minger asks motorists to slow down, be vigilant and steer clear of the roadwork.
