Out and About – Week of January 16th

Breakfast is my favorite meal. I can’t think of a better way to start the day than to get Out and About to a local eatery and partake of a delicious breakfast. A good cup of coffee compliments the meal and without the coffee, the breakfast is incomplete. There are some who enjoy a cola instead of coffee, and this has always been a bit of a mystery to me. I mean, cowboys out on the range never sat around a morning campfire consuming bacon and eggs, followed by an ice-cold diet cola. It’s just not the American Way.
Here are five facts that you might not be aware of:
Coffee drinkers are 45% less likely to commit suicide.
Drinking coffee can reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia.
Coffee releases a hormone called gastrin, which makes you more regular when it comes to visiting the toilet.
Drinking coffee before a workout accelerates fat loss.
Originally, coffee was eaten as an energy snack.
My wife is not much of a breakfast person, but having that cup of coffee first thing in the morning is right on top of her priority list. I know she loves me, because she rarely turns down the opportunity to join me for a nice breakfast out.
The days of “Rowing the Boat” are probably only available in the history books now. Unless you’ve been living in a cave somewhere, everyone is aware that P.J. Fleck is now the head coach at the University of Minnesota. He spent his time at Western Michigan University turning around a football team that didn’t spend too much time in the proper end zone. He did everything he possibly could to make the Western Michigan Broncos a winning team. His team spirit is unmatched and that spirit was transfused into his players. He will be missed but will not be forgotten. He deserves to fulfill his dream of coaching a Big-Ten school. If he ever decides to give up coaching, he’ll make one heck of a motivational speaker.
In my mind, Michigan is the ideal place to live, except for the fact that we are now known as one of the states with the highest fuel and vehicle taxes. Despite this, I’m glad I returned here to live out my golden years. I’m especially thankful for living in St. Joe County, when it comes to the weather. At times, it seems we are living in a bubble. Thank you, Cass County for providing the hills that take the brunt of the winter storms. This was evident a week or so ago, when we went up to Portage for breakfast. We had received a light dusting of snow here in Three Rivers, but as soon as we got north of Schoolcraft, it was like we had entered a different weather zone. This is true almost twelve months a year. If it is clear here, it is raining in Schoolcraft, or west of Jones. Whenever we do receive a winter blizzard, I often think of those poor people who live in Buffalo, New York, or Fargo, North Dakota. I’m also thankful for the great weather we had last November. C’mon, seventy degrees around Thanksgiving!
I want to thank you for your patience. Do you realize that I just wasted a whole paragraph talking about the weather? The funny thing about this is that you’re still reading this, with hopes that you’ll come across something worth remembering. So as not to disappoint you, here are a few positive thoughts from Bob Marley:
“If she’s amazing, she won’t be easy. If she’s easy, she won’t be amazing. If she’s worth it, you won’t give up. If you give up, you’re not worthy.”
See you Out and About!
