Out and About – Week of January 23rd

Now that we are well into 2017, it’s time to go through the file cabinet and get rid of those papers that we really don’t need anymore. It’s also time to get your paperwork in order so that you’re prepared for your meeting with your tax preparer. Many of you will take care of preparing your own returns, but I would rather put my trust in someone who knows what they’re doing. I want to pay my fair share, but I also want to get back as much as I possibly can.
Clearing out your file cabinet is only part of getting your life in order. You don’t see too many Rolodexes anymore, because it’s too easy to store your information in your computer folder. As a safeguard against a power failure, you might want to keep address information on index cards in a small file box. You could put your addressee’s name in ink and other vital information in pencil. Whenever an address or phone number changes, all you need to do is erase the information and re-enter it in pencil. If someone changes their name, I guess you’d need to fill out another card. Just an idea, but it’s always good to have some sort of backup plan.
I’ve never been much for physical exercise, but my doctor has told me that if I want to drop a few pounds, I should exercise a little more. I seriously have tried to keep some sort of routine when it comes to exercising. The most difficult thing about exercising for me is getting over to Health TRAC. Once there, everything is easy. I always feel better by the time I turn in my locker key and walk out the door.
I usually spend some time walking laps in the pool, then about ten minutes in the sauna. I’ve never been much into running, but I’ve heard that if running is your thing, it might be helpful to gauge your fitness. Without straining yourself, cover as much distance as possible by running and/or walking for twelve minutes. If you manage to do a mile or more in that time, you’re in pretty good shape.
If you’re into aerobics, you should do something in aerobics at least three times a week for maximum benefits. Just as important, try to sustain your aerobic pace for at least twenty minutes.
Above all else, we should all make workouts fun. You don’t need to go to a gym or other health facility to do this. Take a walk or jog in a nice park. Most parks have paths available just for this type of exercise. If there’s not much to look at, listen to a book on tape as you take a brisk walk away from any traffic. If you’d rather not leave home, watch television as you pedal a stationary bicycle.
To make exercising more interesting, you might consider setting some goals. They should be specific, measurable, and easily attainable. For example, add five minutes each week to your exercise time. Once you’ve reached a specific goal, celebrate.
Proper exercise isn’t the only way to stay healthy. A proper diet is also very important. As you age, your eating habits will sometimes change. What and how much you eat becomes a big concern in your golden years. I love sloppy joes, chili, tacos, and onions, but since having my gall bladder removed, I’ve had to cut back on my intake. I love a nice salad, so I guess I’m pretty lucky, because the last I’ve heard, salads are still good for us. I’ve always loved bacon and eggs, but I don’t have them every day. According to my doctor, moderation is the key word. I love ice cream, but I don’t load it up with chocolate syrup.
The last I heard, I’m not anemic. Maybe it’s because I enjoy bananas. They are high in iron and potassium, and they stimulate the production of hemoglobin the blood, so it helps in cases of anemia.
When I see lovers’ names carved in a tree, I don’t think it’s sweet. I just think it’s surprising how many people take a knife on a date.
See you Out and About!
