The St. Joseph County United Way set a new record for its annual collection campaign.
Executive director Kelly Hostetler said $887,526 was raised during the Centreville-based agency’s 12-month effort that concluded Tuesday.
The total surpassed the year’s goal of $875,000 and continues a several-years trend of the local United Way surpassing its annual goal.
The campaign’s top donor was Morgan Olson of Sturgis; its employees contributed $108,273.
Sheriff Brad Balk and Undersheriff Mark Lillywhite – named co-chairs of the United Way 2018 campaign – were reminded by Hostetler that the onus is on them to encourage donors to dig deeper, reach higher and look for new sources of funding during the 2018 campaign, which starts this week.
The money collected for the 2017 campaign will start being distributed among 42 recipients starting next week.
