Helen L. MacDonald, age 90, of Leonidas, died Friday, March 10, 2017 at Sturgis Hospital. She was born in Athens, MI on May 12, 1926 the daughter of Carl and Avril (Greensides) Collyer. She was a member of the Athens High school class of 1943. Helen was married to Carl MacDonald on Aug. 22, 1943 in Pine Creek, MI. They moved to Leonidas in 1953 where together they operated Mac’s Market for over 30 years. Helen later worked at Cut-Rate Food Market in Battle Creek and at Continental Can Company in Three Rivers for 10 years. She was a member of the former Leonidas Jay-Cettes and the Leonidas Community Action Group. She enjoyed reading, solving puzzles, and was a Detroit Tiger baseball fan.
Helen is survived by five children, Sharon (Tom) Heath, Barry (Mary Lou) MacDonald, Cheryl Moyer, Debra (Greg) Diffendal, and Shannon (Donnie) Cerny all of Leonidas; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and her cat, Boots. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl in 1997; two brothers, Arthur and Donald Collyer; and son in law, Jerry Moyer.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A public memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at 2:00 PM in the Mendon United Methodist Church with Pastor Thoreau May and Rev. Emilie Forward officiating.
