A milestone event sponsored by the St. Joseph County Conservation District took place this week in Lockport Township.
The agency on Tuesday and Wednesday staged its 50th annual “Conservation Tour Day” at Covered Bridge Park. Fourth-grade students from all nine school districts in the county, as well as from Lake Area and Factoryville Christian schools, took part in the day-long event.
Carolyn Grace, Conservation District executive director, said 706 students in all were a part of the 2017 tour.
The tour featured seven stations, where students learned more about conservation-related subjects such as recycling, water-powered electricity, pond ecology, wildlife appreciation and beekeeping.
Grace said the tour was originally done for fifth-grade students, but it was revised to fourth grade starting this year to align with state standardized testing.
