Former Sturgis Elks member is honored

A fundraiser to benefit a Sturgis Elks program – and to honor the memory of a former member – drew more than 30 participants Saturday.
Organized by Klinger Lake resident John Nelson, “The Braddle” canoe and kayak paddle from Thompson Lake to Klinger Lake honored Brad Baker. The 55-year-old Baker passed away from brain cancer in November 2015 and was an avid kayaker.
Nelson said Baker also enthusiastically supported “Boots and Shoes,” a benevolent program overseen by the Sturgis Elks.
The inaugural Braddle in 2016 drew more than 40 people and raised more than $2,400 by its participants. Nelson said it will be a few weeks before the total raised Saturday will be confirmed. He remains optimistic, however, that the figure will exceed what was raised in 2016.
Proceeds will be turned over to the Sturgis Elks.
