About 50 pounds of debris was cleared Saturday from a three-mile stretch of the St. Joseph River.
The event, sponsored by the St. Joseph County Conservation District, started at North Farrand Road in Colon Township and concluded at Jacksonburg Road in Leonidas Township.
It drew a dozen volunteers and netted debris such as a tire, parts of a lawn chair, landscape material, a large quantity of bottles and cans, and a shoe.
The conservation district will conduct its next cleanup at 9:30 a.m. June 24 from Jacksonburg Road to M-66, also about three miles.
Prospective participants are asked to make a reservation in order for organizers to secure enough kayaks and canoes. Lunch will be provided at the conclusion. The agency’s number is 467-6336, ext. 5.
