The St. Joseph County Conservation District is staging the first of its seven river cleanups of 2017 this Saturday.
The Centreville-based agency is looking for volunteers to assist with cleaning the three-mile stretch of the St. Joseph River from North Farrand Road in Colon Township to Jacksonburg Road in Leonidas Township.
All equipment will be provided, but organizers need to know in advance how many kayaks and canoes to reserve, and how much food to prepare for lunch. Prospective participants can call 467-6336, ext. 5.
Subsequent cleanups involve the St. Joseph River June 24 and July 8 to Railroad Park in Mendon, and the Prairie River July 22, Aug. 5 and 19, and Sept. 9 from Prairie Lake to Lutz Road.
