A psychiatric evaluation has been ordered for Portage resident Zachary Patten.
The 32-year-old Patten is accused of killing two people, one near Constantine and the other in Kalamazoo, on July 20.
The evaluation is to be conducted at Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Grand Rapids. It was ordered by District Court Judge Jeff Middleton Tuesday at a preliminary conference.
According to authorities, Patten allegedly shot and killed a 31-year-old woman in Kalamazoo, then drove to a home belonging to his ex-wife in Florence Township.
Police said 29- year-old Shane Richardson, his pregnant wife and two children were watching television around 10 p.m. when Patten knocked on the door, but was told to leave.
Patten broke a window in the door and forced his way into the home, confronting Richardson, police said, then shot Richardson at point-blank range.
Patten turned himself in to South Bend police the next day.
