Barry A. Mumby, age 74, of Colon, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.
Barry was born Aug. 30, 1943, in Three Rivers, a son of the late Robert J. and Evelyn J. (Shellenbarger) Mumby.
Barry grew up on the family farm in Fulton and graduated from Colon High School with the class of 1961. In 2003, he moved to Colon.
In 1963, he graduated from MSU after a two-year Agricultural Short Course. He farmed with his parents on the family farm north of Leonidas.
On Sept. 12, 1964, he married Diana L. Hankis in Jackson.
Barry served on the Glen Oaks Community College board of trustees as president, was a founding board member of the United Soybean Board, traveling to 23 foreign countries representing American farmers and serving as chairman two years. In 1979, he and five other men founded Mendon Seed Growers Corporation and eventually he was sole owner, received MSU’s Distinguished Service Award in 2003, received Michigan’s Outstanding Young Farmer Award in 1979, was Leonidas Little League baseball coach, was Leonidas 4-H swine leader and fair swine superintendent, the 4-H commodity leader, and also served on the Federal Reserve Board Midwest region.
He is survived by his wife, Diana L. Mumby of Colon; three children, David (Deanna) Mumby of Leonidas, Sean (Amy) Mumby of Fulton, and Kathryn (Mike) Sprouse of Henderson, Nev.; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a sister, Katherine Schwenk of Portage; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Judith Sharp; an infant sister; and an infant brother.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Schipper Funeral Home in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of Barry A. Mumby will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, 2017, at the funeral home, with the Rev. David J. Farrell officiating. Burial will follow at Beard Cemetery in Leonidas township.
If desired, memorials may be made in memory of Barry to the St Joseph County 4-H Livestock Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
