Weather hurts walk-a-thon turnout

Representatives from the Animal Rescue Fund of St. Joseph County remained upbeat Saturday even though the agency’s annual walk-a-thon at Scidmore Park in Three Rivers was marred by wet weather.

Volunteer Chris Waters said the walk-a-thon was advertised as taking place rain or shine and a few people, Jones resident Cheryl Haskins and Shelly Starr of Three Rivers, showed up with their dogs.

Haskins said she has attended the walk-a-thon several consecutive years. The fundraiser started in 2007. Saturday marked the first year the walk-a-thon took place at Scidmore Park, as it previously was at Meyer Broadway Park.

Waters, meanwhile, said despite the light turnout, she’s happy to take advantage of any occasion to promote ARF.

Founded in 1998, ARF raises funds with a mission of providing spay and neuter services to dogs and cats in St. Joseph County.
