Members of St. Joseph County’s animal control department are optimistic 2018 will be a good year for the agency.
Their goal is to secure enough funding to begin firm plans for a new facility. A site – located southeast of the current complex – has been identified. But, Sheriff Brad Balk said, it’s a long road to the goal of $100,000.
He said there is no money allocated in the 2018 fiscal year budget for a new animal control facility However, Balk said, he has established a partnership with Kelly Hostetler from the United Way.
Balk said anyone who wants to contribute to the building grant fund can do it through the local United Way.
The fund recently received $10,000 from an anonymous donor. Balk said the fund is nearly one-third of the way to its goal. The $100,000 would trigger a matching grant, he noted.
