Glen Oaks Community College’s board of trustees voted last week to approve a concourse design and move forward with a USDA loan application for the improvements.
Architect Andrew Lechner of Arkos Design gave a presentation on the project Thursday.
He said changes will include moving the cafe, the addition of an art gallery and expanded restrooms.
President David Devier told trustees that the original $1.2 million the college thought it would need to complete the project would not be enough. A more realistic figure, he said, was between $1.6 million and $1.8 million.
If the college were to apply for the $1.8 million USDA loan, at current rates, the college would pay about $90,000 per year for the next 30 years.
After further discussion, trustee Nancy Percival made a motion to approve a request for $2.2 million, a figure board members agreed would allow for a more thorough renovation.
