Psychologist gets prison sentence

A Sturgis psychologist was sentenced to 28 months in prison after pleading guilty to executing a health care fraud scheme.

George Compton Jr., 63, was sentenced Nov. 21 by U. S. District Court Judge Gordon Quist.

Compton had operated a psychology practice in Coldwater.

In a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Compton was accused of billing numerous health care insurance companies for psychological counseling sessions he never provided.

Officials said Compton established legitimate relationships with numerous patients to provide periodic counseling sessions. He then regularly billed his patients’ health care benefit programs for counseling session that had not occurred.

During a 41-month investigation conducted by the FBI Kalamazoo office, Compton received more than $800,000 in fraudulent insurance payments, spending $ 410,000 on credit cards, sound equipment for his business ACE Mobile Recording, vacations, concert tickets and other personal items, according to authorities.
