Road commission considers Covered Bridge future

Members of the St. Joseph County Road Commission discussed the future of the Langley Covered Bridge during their monthly meeting Wednesday.

Considering the bridge’s continued maintenance requirements and general repair needs, board members have discussed the possibility of turning it into a pedestrian bridge and putting another bridge alongside it.

Three Rivers resident Anna Smith said a new bridge would be positive for the area, while allowing the covered bridge to remain in place as the county’s icon.

Smith suggested turning over the covered bridge to the St. Joseph County Parks and Recreation Department, which could oversee events such as bicycle rallies and weddings inside the bridge.

Road commission manager Chris Minger said inspectors are compiling reports and the road commission did not yet have that information.

He expects to eventually stage public hearings on the future of the covered bridge.
