Bertha F. Classen, age 89, of Sturgis, passed away Monday afternoon, Jan. 29, 2018, at Birch Adult Foster Care in Leonidas.
She was born Sept. 28, 1928, in Meade, Kan., a daughter of the late Jacob and Lena (Friesen) Loewen.
Mrs. Classen resided in Sturgis since 1971, coming from Walnut Hill, Fla.
On July 23, 1948, she married George Classen in Meade.
Mrs. Classen was a dedicated homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Sturgis Evangelical Church and enjoyed quilting, embroidery, crocheting, reading and baking.
She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband of 69 years, George; three daughters, Judy (Gary) Miller of Sturgis, Marj Jackson of Kalamazoo and Norma (Eugene) Troyer of Sturgis; two sons, Loren (Sharon) Classen of Goshen, Ind., and Merlin (Wilma) Classen of Mendon; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, John (Ruth) Loewen of Meade, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Elizabeth Classen; and a brother, Henry Loewen.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Sturgis Evangelical Church, 28201 E. Fawn River Road in Sturgis. A memorial service celebrating the life of Bertha F. Classen will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Pastor Clint Wood will officiate. Private burial will take place at Locust Grove Cemetery in Burr Oak.
Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, is entrusted with the arrangements.
