Three Rivers Fire Chief Carl Holcomb is urging residents and business owners near rivers to prepare for rising waters and have an evacuation plan ready.
Holcomb also recommended people stay off the rivers, as high water levels cause strong currents. In addition, Holcomb said motorists should not attempt to drive through barricaded streets and roadways.
Water levels were expected to crest sometime Saturday at high-flood stage. Continued major flooding is expected and may increase with further rain.
For residents in the flood-affected areas, it is advised that they make preparations to evacuate their homes due to flooding basements that may result in an interruption of their gas and electrical utilities.
Any affected residents requiring temporary emergency shelter should contact the Three Rivers Commission on Aging, at 279-8083.
Sand bags are available for purchase at the Three Rivers Department of Public Services and the St Joseph County Sheriff’s Department.
