Road commission awards contracts

The St. Joseph County Road Commission has awarded asphalt projects to Michigan Paving and Materials, which will perform work on Constantine Road, a Sturgis Township subdivision and sections of the Tamarac subdivision in Lockport Township.

The effort will complete four-tenths of a mile stretch of Constantine Road north to Mintdale Road, and also the section of Constantine Road between Fairchild and Roys roads.

Road commissioner Eric Shafer said he and fellow board member Rod Chupp met with St. Joseph County commissioners Dennis Allen and Allen Balog to discuss road funding.

Due to its financial difficulties, the county cut some of the $191,000 it traditionally has given the road commission for maintenance of the county’s culverts and 97 bridges.

Construction on Constantine Road from Fairchild to Roys is expected to begin in late summer.
